Ancient coins fall into three categories. Genuine coins made in official ancient mints for use as coins. Ancient counterfeits made by private individuals with the intent of spending them. Modern fakes and forgeries made in recent time to pass as genuine to collectors or tourists. Most of the examples I discuss on the pages below are modern fakes, but I hope to expand this to include more ancient counterfeits.
