Fake Mark Antony DenariusEnlargement This is a modern fake of a Mark Antony denarius of the legionary denarius series (legion VIII). WEIGHT:3.49 grams SIZE: 16.0 X 16.8 mm STYLE: Good MANUFACTURE: Probably metal mold casting of base metal FIRST IMPRESSION: poor to fair CHARACTERISTICS: The first impression of this coin is that something is wrong. The metal is far too bright and shiny to be silver, and the toning appears to be black paint. The look and feel suggest the surfaces are plated (possibly with rhodium or chrome), which suggests a base metal core. An examination of the edge show a clear and pronounced mold line running all the way around the coin which can be seen on the image below. RELATIVE DANGERDEALERVery low COLLECTOR EXPERIENCED Very low NOVICE Moderate This coin was cast from an original so it captures the general style correctly, but it is not at all convincing if physically examined. The odd color of the metal (it is not silver), and the mold line of the edge, are clear evidence of a fake that most people should easily recognize. However, if only presented with a digital image that does not show the edge, it can be more of a problem. Back to examples of fakes. Top of Page
