Calgary Coin & Antique Two Standing Saintslate 18th to very early 19th centuryRussian cast brass icon, with an image of two saints standing forward. Larger image 500 x 696 - 76.9KB |
As yet we have been unable to identify which saints are depicted as the Cyrillic inscriptions naming them are somewhat worn. The top arch shows a small figure of Christ in the clouds with his hands raised. The back is un-decorated.
Unfortunately this icon is not intact; it is the center panel of a tryptic (three part) icon, which is why it is priced so inexpensively. Most likely one or both of the other panels were damaged so the hinges were filed off to make this look like a stand alone panel. The metal where the hinges were removed is brighter than the rest of the icon which suggests they were removed relatively recently. 84.4 mm wide, 118.8 mm high and 2.1 mm thick. Dating to the late 18th to very early 19th century.
